This is a continuation of my pandemic distraction of taking sunrise photos
on almost every day one is visible.
Each set of images is preceded by a personally written haiku
describing how I felt on the day they were taken.
Day 762 - 852
(Apr 1 - Jun 30)
Applying filters
Restricts our ability
To see the details
When chaos abounds
Down is up and up is down
What do you believe?
She wore her halo
Shining light above the fog
A headpiece of ice
Her shine was muted
By forces she could not control
Yet, she persisted
She begins to shine
Well before her appearance
Lighting up my day
Once in a blue moon
Planets line up in a row
And skies come alive
Morning fog and clouds
Blanketed the horizon
A new perspective
Watching the sunrise
On the top of my Stonehenge
With tears in my eyes
The last day of spring
Occurs half way through the year
New cycles begin
Where does the sun sleep
When she leaves us in the dark
Is it all a dream?
The moon and the sun
Partners in the morning sky
A cosmic delight
Perspectives matter
What we hear is opinion
What we see is not
Boundaries become blurred
And perspectives entangled
When two worlds collide
Little does one know
Sometimes you just need to breathe
And enjoy the time
"What sunrise?" they'll say.
Can't you see it's cloudy out?
And I will just smile.
The hay-scented ferns
Now cover the forest floor
A carpet of green
Her beauty clouded
Veiled in atmospheric haze
Longing to shine through
How does one describe
Those moments of raw beauty
That make me shudder
A different view
Of a familiar subject
Further strengthens bonds
The fog has returned
For the first time since last fall
Perspectives refreshed
Just like an old friend
I was greeted with her smile
It's good to be home
She called 911
When her car went off the road
Happy to be saved
First things first. No one was hurt and this accident didn't involve me or any of my family. Now for the rest of the story...
While driving through the Virgin Islands National Park to capture this morning's sunrise, I came upon the scene of a motor vehicle accident. The road was closed to allow emergency workers room to operate. I got out of my Jeep and approached the scene to get a closer look at what was going on. As I did, a local police officer approached me and asked that I stand back. I explained that I was a retired firefighter and was just curious about what was happening. That admission seemed to open the door to the scene. She also told the other first responders of my background and we started up a conversation.
The driver of this vehicle called 911 after leaving the road. However, she wasn't exactly certain where she was so it took first responders some time to find her. If you look closely at the second image, you'll understand why.
I've always been impressed with any tow truck operator that knows how to use their tool. This person was no different.
While I wasn't able to get to the spot I originally had planned to capture the sunrise from, I still made it to the top of a hill on the East End to capture her beauty.
Another day. Another memory made.
The sun rose again
Not as brightly as before
Young lives lost too soon
Leaving the island
And memories created
Thank you St. Thomas
A chair on the beach
And a swing hung from a tree
Invite me to rest
The Saharan winds
Riding high on westerlies
North African glow
The Virgin Islands
Provide comfort to my soul
And joy to my heart
The unsung hero
Clearing the sargassum tide
At the crack of dawn
Tropical sunrise
With sea breezes and coral
Same time zone as home
Sunrise serenade
Became music to my ears
While catching my breath
Let me not forget
Or ever take for granted
Your boundless beauty
The buds in the trees
Clung tightly to their branches
Buffeted by wind
The fruit of the vine
Is still months from harvesting
Longing for summer
Her glow caught my eye
Her radiance sucked me in
Unfolding beauty
She exposed herself
Coloring the morning sky
Then faded to gray
A double sunrise
Allows for her to shine twice
Repeated beauty
I took in a breath
And waited between heartbeats
To capture her glow
The earth's rotation
Exposed her light to my world
Recharging my soul
Devoid of color
Leaving only shades of gray
To match the cold air
Her shyness was gone
Set aside for the moment
It was time to shine
She hid from my gaze
Behind cold, wind-driven clouds
Leaving me wanting
The gray of winter
Replaced the green of spring
A cold day begins
Hidden behind clouds
Her light continues to shine
Even in dark times
We exchanged hellos
During our morning visit
Left me with a smile
Lines across the sky
Of orange and yellow hues
Color the morning
The Minot's Ledge Light
Flashing cycle 1-4-3
Meaning "I love you"
Hidden in shadows
Waiting for light from the sun
Visible at last
This one stands alone
Breathtaking in it's beauty
Stunning it it's glow
Flurries in the air
Strong winds blowing through the trees
Fresh snow on the ground
Hidden in shadows
Waiting for light from the sun
Visible at last
On this Easter morn'
Skies were ablaze with color
And sprinkled with snow
My remote office
Seventy years young today
And still standing tall
Rising in silence
Impacting all that we touch
With her cosmic rays
I've missed you my friend
My days were just not the same
Happy to see you
A yearning for life
As the trees reach for her rays
To bloom once again
A sunrise delayed
Complicated her palette
Astounding beauty
Bands of cosmic rays
Surround you as you take flight
From behind the clouds
When the sun is gone
Her beauty can still be found
Just look around you
